Culture and Performing Arts

Charleston has many performing arts groups ranging from nonprofessional community groups to the professional with outstanding guest artists. These groups include: Charleston Ballet; Charleston Chamber Music Society; Charleston Civic Chorus; Charleston Community Music Association; Charleston Light Opera Guild; Children's Theatre of Charleston; Friends of Old Time Music and Dance (FOOTMAD); Kanawha Players; The West Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra. Appalachian Children's Choir
This is a community based audition-tuition children's choral program consisting of five choirs for children, grades Kindergarten through twelve. The Appalachian Children's Choir performances include a variety of music. The annual concert season includes two holiday concerts in December, a Benefit Concert in February, and two spring concerts--one in April and May. Private performances can be scheduled by calling 304/343-1111.

Charleston Stage Company
This multicultural theatre company performs theatre productions for West Virginia audiences. For more than a decade, Charleston Stage Company has been doing experimental, avant garde plays, new drama and European and American classic dramas.

Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences- West Virginia

Considered one of the most ambitious cultural and educational undertakings in West Virginia. Established to serve the arts, sciences and technology by bringing together educational exhibits and programs and performances in dance and music. This state-of-the-art facility includes a Science Center with a Planetarium, a 1,880-seat Performance Hall, Virtual Education Center, art museum, Avampato Discovery Museum, and exhibit galleries. 304/346-1100.

Mountain Stage
West Virginia Public Radio's live two-hour arts performance show is broadcast almost every Sunday at 6:00 pm at the Cultural Center Theater in the State Capitol Complex. The show features nationally and internationally recognized musicians. Mountain Stage is one of the most popular programs offered to Public Radio International's member stations, and is heard on 130 PRI stations nationwide. Tickets available by calling TICKETMASTER at 304/342-5757, or at the door, beginning at 1:30 pm the day of the performance.

West Virginia Symphony Orchestra
Season runs from September through April with a schedule of symphonic and pop performances. The Orchestra also presents Symphony Sunday in June. 304/342-0160.
