Whether it's to hold a sporting event or just to have fun, Charleston has a wide variety of parks. With everything from trails and golf to swimming and picnicing, there's an abundance of outdoor venues to suit just about any activity. Charleston Alley Cats (South Atlantic League), Charleston Distance Run, North-South All-Star High School Football game, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament, State Boys and Girls High School Basketball Tournament. A variety of high school and college athletics including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, track and State Cheerleading Championship are all held at local venues.

Laidley's stadium, football, soccer and track facility, has one of the finest metric tracks in the eastern United States and seats 18,600. Regularly scheduled annual events include West Virginia High School Track and Field Championship in May, State High School North-South All-Star Football game in June and the Kanawha County High School Majorette Festival in September. Appalachian Power Park
Watch the West Virginia Power, a professional class "A" minor league baseball affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, play at Appalachian Power Park, 601 Morris Street, Charleston, WV 25301, (exit 100) The park seats 4,500.

- Sunday games begin at 2:05 p.m.
- All 140 games are on radio WBES-AM 1240
Appalachian Power Park also serves the entire Kanawha Valley for Little League, Senior League, Big League, high school and college games. Concerts and festivals are also scheduled. Charleston's largest municipal park. Facilities include an executive par 3 golf course with pro shop, an Olympic-size swimming pool and picnic areas. Coonskin Park
Park facilities include swimming pool, boathouse with paddle boats, clubhouse with dining facilities, tennis courts, putt putt golf and an 18 hole par 3 golf course. Other activities include picnicking, nature trails, West Virginia Chaos Soccer Team home games at Schoenbaum Soccer Field and Amphitheatre and a fishing lake. Open daily except Christmas Day. Coonskin Drive off State Route 114 north of Charleston (Greenbrier St. exit) about 5 miles. A four-acre park on the banks of the Kanawha River. Facilities include a boat ramp, fishing pier, and picnic areas. US Route 60 just east of Charleston. 304/348-6860.
KANAWHA STATE FOREST
A favorite for outdoor activities, everything from a small picnic to a full-fledged scouting weekend. 46 campsites offer a variety of ways to rough it. Other activities in this 9,300-acre forest include swimming, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and year-round horseback riding. I-64 Exit 58A, then US 119 South to Oakwood Road and follow the signs. 304/558-3500.
